5 Swollen Eyeball Causes and Treatments

#Best Eye Hospital in Bhopal

Is your eyeball swollen, bulging, or puffy? An infection, trauma, or other preexisting condition may be the cause. Read on to learn five potential causes, their symptoms, and treatment options.

Swelling of the eye, also referred to as periorbital puffiness, refers to the presence of excess fluid (edema) in the connective tissues around the eye, most commonly the eyelids. A swollen eye can result from

  • trauma,
  • infections, or
  • Other injuries to the eye area.

Other signs and symptoms can be associated with swelling of the eye, including

  • excess tear production or discharge,
  • eye irritation,
  • eye redness,
  • dry eyes, or
  • Obstructed or impaired vision, depending on the cause.

Trauma to the eye

Trauma to the eye is defined as direct impact to the eye or surrounding area. This can occur during sports, car accidents, and Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is commonly called pinkeye. A viral or bacterial infection in the conjunctiva often causes it. Allergic reactions to irritants may also be a culprit. Pinkeye symptoms include:

  • swelling in the eye
  • sensitivity to light
  • red or pink appearance of eye tissue
  • Eye watering or seeping other high-impact situations.

Subconjunctival hemorrhage

If you have one or more blood spots in the white of your eye (sclera), you could have a subconjunctival hemorrhage. If a blood vessel breaks in the clear outer membrane of your eye, blood could leak between it and the white of your eye. This is typically harmless and generally heals on its own.

Graves’ disease

In Graves’ ophthalmopathy, the immune system attacks the tissues and muscles surrounding the eyes, resulting in inflammation that produces a bulging-eye effect. Other symptoms include:

  • reddened eyes
  • pain in the eyes
  • pressure in eyes
  • retracted or puffy eyelids
  • light sensitivity
